Music in University

So it's been 2 months+ into my university life.... now let me share my story, what I've learn so far...

One thing I kinda like about my university is that I'm surrounded with lots of musical elements, from students playing instruments, to the exposure of different types of musical mediums.

Just discovered that in the library we're able to listen or watch CD/DVD/Blu-Ray with these great players!
P1000240

Although I plan to major in Sounds and Acoustics, studying in this field to requires a certain level of musical knowledge from different point of views as myself, can't really play any instruments well (I do hope to learn one or two in near future).

Currently am studying music from the point of view of the aesthetics (音楽美学), the recording process (音楽録音) and lastly musical therapy (音楽療法).
Haven't really get deep into the major Acoustics (音響) yet but will be doing so in 2nd and 3rd year in the university.

I do enjoyed the 3 music-related subjects as mentioned above so far. Good thing those are spread from Wed to Fri so I can look forward the following days to attend the classes after dreadful Tuesday's lessons hah.

The lecturer of the aesthetics is an interesting lecturer. I like the lecturer who not only talks about the main topic (which is music obviously), but also able to relate it with our modern life, how music had made impact in our human civilization since the ancient times.
It's a semi-music history lesson, but who will get bored when you can listen to different types of music from the ancient times to the current modern world?
Currently finished Renaissance and now we're into Baroque!

I do thought of working as a studio sound engineer so to learn about the recording process is an important part in the Acoustics department. This lesson is taught by 2 lecturers who're both successful musical producers and directors in respective fields.
While the younger one is more into rock and pop band, the elder one is more towards classical recordings, which make both of them invaluable figures to learn from.

Few weeks ago we were shown these music players like the classical phonograph/gramaphone and even try to play vinyl records on it!

A turntable phonograph and the classic gramaphone.
P1000214

According to the lecturer this is some of the earliest recording devices created during Thomas Edison's era. Kinda baffled what can a cylinder works eh? It's to record down the voices as shown on the pic below. Unfortunately there's no demonstration for this.

Vinyl records which some might find it obsolete but still it packs with fantastic musical quality!
P1000218
P1000219
P1000222

Yep, this artwork is actually a playable vinyl record too!
P1000220

I was taken away by the superb quality of these analog music! I've long heard people talking about the sound quality of analogy and I'm lucky enough to experience it!

(Pics above were taken with my mobile phone. Forgotten to bring my camera along that day...)

Next up, is the musical therapy which I may have mentioned here before lately. It's purpose is to use music instead of drugs and treatments to help patients, or at least help them to feel better in some ways.
This is the interesting part to learn, how music can change, move people.

Weeks ago we had covered briefings on how music therapy is being applied to autistic, William's Syndrome children, and this week we're starting about musical therapy and stress.

This topic really interest me because to be honest, reading the text is like reading what I'm going through lately. During the class we're asked to measure our heartbeat before and after listening to a relaxing piano tune. Well to my surprise, the heartbeat actually increases a little after listening the music.

Seems like I wasn't the only one who had this issue, as some fellow students in the class also experience the same thing. According to the lecturer's explanation, it might be caused by the majority of students who had strong influence in music (granted, most of us are doing things related to music), so when we listen to the music instead of enjoying it, we will also listening it analytically (eg: identify the piano's timbre, tempo etc).
For some, it might brought back certain memories listening to song like this.

I think my beat rises because I'm kinda excited with it especially when I like the piano tune alot. Knowing myself the best, I knew that whenever I heard a song or tune for the first time, if I like it I'll easily get excited over it heh. I guess that's one of the main reasons why I chose to study in fields related to music, to discover new music that could excite me.

Although at this moment I haven't learn more in depth with the genre of music should be used, but I observed that instrumental, like piano songs work quite well as it basically works for the general public.
Orchestral or traditional music may not be that effective as the audience might interpret it stereotypically instead of enjoying the music for it's pure rhythms and melodies.

Below are a few samples I can find on Youtube, mostly are piano pieces.

Feedback on Game's Sound

Well this is a report that I'll be passing up next week. First drafted it in English before translating it back into Japanese. Tough job but I can only relay my thoughts better in English for now.

Since it's an interesting topic so I've decided to post it on the blog. What's your say? :)

Feedback on Game's Sound

Student ID 31010130
Name Cheng Ling Fan
Subject Multi field: Game Sound 1st term (year 2010 Spring semester)

It was a very interesting subject to study indeed. As a fan of game’s music this lesson had given me the chance to look in depth into the world of game’s music, which doesn’t just limited to composing the BGM, but as well as the sound effects etc.

In my opinion, music has great power that could move people, just like how soundtracks/scores come together to make a great movie (example: Lord of The Rings, Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean etc.).

In the game’s industry, Final Fantasy is a great example as they’ve been in the market since the 1980s and still going strong today. Songs used in the series had been regarded as some of the best compositions of game’s music industry, which is why the concert of Final Fantasy music is so popular around worldwide, mostly fans of Final Fantasy games.

For some people, they love to play the game not because of the storyline, but because of the sounds in the game.

The sounds, BGMs enhance the game’s overall playability, make the game even fun, even more interesting. The usage of the song genres is equally important as well.
For example, rock songs work well with battle scenes; adventurous orchestral piece for exploring the world map.
The atmosphere of a particular city or location can also be expressed well in the form of sound, music. Example: cave would normally be paired with a dark, eerie tone.

When listening to the music/sounds off the game, it would remind people of the scenes, story, character in the game. How would the songs/sounds relate to them, happens naturally within our conscious. It’s the same concept as recalling the memory stored in our brain when we look at a photo, or watch a video.

Although I’m currently still a first year student, but it’s an interesting field that I can consider for my future, as I would like to work in music production related to movie soundtracks or game sounds. It’ll be a pleasure to work in a job that could somewhat manipulate emotion and inspiring others at the same time. Thus, I might consider taking the game’s sound class during my 2nd year in the university.

Music communicates with people’s inner soul, directly and indirectly.

Well here're some examples of music used in few Final Fantasy series, which I've been quoting as the examples in my report.

"Liberi Fatali", opening of Final Fantasy VIII. [link]

"To Zanarkand", from Final Fantasy X. [link]

"Waltz For the Moon", from Final Fantasy VIII. [link]

"One-Winged Angel", the final boss Sephiroth's theme from Final Fantasy VII. [link]

Discoveries

These few days I've been wondering around on my bicycle, and the outcome has been pretty good, something I didn't expected hah.

First, is the discovery of a 2nd hand goods store located not far from the daily commuting route. Instead of turn right as usual, I took the left route and discovered the shop.

The section which stirs my interest is the audio CD part (as usual). There're 2 rows of shelves dedicated for CDs ranging from Japanese artists, English artists, to a few soundtracks too.
Price ranged from 105 yen to 500 yen, and some unopened albums selling above 1k yen.

Here's some of my loots worth to be mentioned here.

I've been wanted to get Enya's album after having Celine Dion, Toni Braxton and Mariah Carey's. This "The Best of Enya" fits into my collection well.
IMG_8350

Ennio Morricone is a famous film music composer which I've yet to get acquaintance of. Since this album just cost 105 yen so I'll just take it.
IMG_8348

"Long Vacation" is a J-drama I've watched many many years ago. It was fateful that I've bump into this album selling at dirt cheap 105 yen! Didn't hesitate to grab it.
IMG_8412

Kenny G collection. I like the cover image illustrating a cartoonish Kenny G with the fine details like the blend of musical notes with the hair and the saxophone nose hah!
IMG_8419

One of the best grab were these Enigma albums. Haven't seen Enigma albums anywhere before and I'm surprised to see quite a few of them on the shelves.
The album graphic designs were unique for the later years which smartly made use of semi-transparent materials.
The albums: MCMXD aD, The Screen Behind The Mirror, Enigma 3.

The other discovery I've made was playing around with my camera. I used to complain that I had difficulties to capture pics in low-light condition. Using flash light will just ruin it.

Last night the moon was round and bright, so I tried to play around in the camera's manual mode, and switch between different ISO ranges. I was stunned with the results....

Summary of what I've learn about ISO.
1. Before this I dislike to switch ISO settings is because the photo will appears to be grainy and noisy, thus it'll ruin the details of the pic.
2. My hand isn't stable so just a little tremble will produce blurry pics. The winter weather doesn't help much as I've to take off my gloves in order to had better grip of the camera. A tripod will help perhaps?
3. From the few pics above, I notice that there's no universal setting for ISO settings based on the lighting condition. Some pics will look better in higher ISO range but some will shines the most at mid-range settings.
4. I've yet to learn how low ISO settings can contribute to photography. Any suggestions?

That's all for now..... sharing with you my discoveries.  :D

Re-Tag: Questions Regarding Music

Spotted this tag about music while browsing through some old archives few days ago. Decided to give myself another try to see how much my musical taste had changed compare to bout 5 years ago.

Questions regarding music.

1. What is the total amount of music files on your computer?

2005: It shows 6.54 GB of space being used for media files in my WMP 10 Library section.
2009: Not sure how many GBs, but WMP 11's library shows more than 5000 items, worth more than 340 hours (roughly 2 weeks time) of songs.

2. The CD you last bought?

2005: MegaDance Hits 1990-2000. I got that at Carrefour, just a few days after I get my PMR result. Lots of nice song.
2009: Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed A Dream".
IMG_5594

3. What was the last song you listened to before reading this message?

2005: Well, I'm listening to MLTR's "Take Me To Your Heart" while answering this question.
2009: Sadeness, Part 1 by Enigma.

4. Write down five songs that you often listen to or that mean a lot to you.

2005: Hmm..... this question is a tricky one. I thinkz I'll only list out the 5 fav songs from Maksim..... 'coz the rest it'll be cracking my head to think of it. :(

Croatian Rhapsody
That's the reason why I like Maksim very much. I didnt really notice this song when KY burnt a CD for me, including this track by Maksim. When I listen the whole CD, I end up addicted in this wonderful music. There's no doubt if one day Croatia is planning to replace their national anthem with Croatian Rhapsody. :D

Kolibre
The main single of Variations. I love this more tha I love Maksim's notable "Flight Of The Bumble Bee". Kolibre is a fast pace song, quite similiar to FotB. I'm amaze when I watch the MV of Kolibre. Maksim's hands are like ghostly hand hitting on every notes without any mistakes, and he do it in high speed!!

Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
A long song though. Firstly I dont like this song. But after I watch it's MV in his PREMIERE Performance DVD in Round House, London 2003, I started to love this one. It starts with a joking-like tune, followed by an amazing piano tricks by Maksim himself. The song lasted for about 10 mins, and the song ends with a sudden grand finale. The song was totally down at the end of the track, then suddently the whole song risen up with a quick pace and then, it ends with a simple touch.

Totentanz
Maksim call this song as his fav in Variations. The name "Totentanz" can be translated into "Dance of Macabre" or "Dance of Death". This song is a haunted song when I first listen to it, but soon I started to like this song. I dunno why but I'd like it. :D

Cubana
One of the major pieces in The Piano Player. This piece is a lively one, it's totally different than any other music performed by Maksim. I'm starting to become lively once I listen to this song.

2009: My musical tastebud changed dramatically in these few years time, no longer stuck with Maksim only.

Joe Hisaishi "Asian Dream Song" [watch]
A powerful song to evoke certain emotion in me, the feeling to push forward and live life positively. I think I'm inclined towards this song due to it's Oriental-flavour, which my heritage hails from.

Yanni "Nightingale" [watch]
I would describe this song as a wonderful discovery. I somewhat got it many years back dated as far as 2003, but I didn't know the name of the song as it's just merely tagged as "Yanni - Meditation".
A smoothing piece with the genius touch of blending Western instruments in Asian tune, I would say this one of the best masterpiece Yanni had ever composed, simply stunning!
[Link]

Hans Zimmer "Drink Up Me Hearties"
Absolutely love this upbeat tune, the theme of The Pirates of The Caribbean. Witty and lively, reminds me of the character Jack Sparrow which I adore. I only watch the movie after I heard this song, so-called "reverse engineering" heh. To conclude it, this is the song you'll need if you thinking of boosting ur mood.
[Link]

Howard Shore "Concerning Hobbits" [watch]
One of the themes from Lord Of The Rings. Wasn't aware of this song until I heard from the OST. A lively and relaxing tune, always love to chill out listening to this song, setting the imagination of Hobbit's life in the Shire.
[link]

Des'ree "You Gotta Be" [watch]
There are times when I'm down, feeling upset, I'd play this song to ease off the feelings a little. The lyric is meaningful to cheer me up, reminds myself that life isn't permanent so the best is to enjoy every moment! :)
[link]

Heh, it's interesting to see that my choice of music changed quite abit, but nevertheless I still prefer instrumental music to vocals. But that doesn't mean that I don't listen to vocals (song with people singing) at all, I do listen to a few nice ones quite often.

Might be digging out some old tags again and redo it, to compare how I've been doing so far.

Lethal Industry

Am currently hooked with this upbeat tune by DJ Tiesto. This is one of his famous tunes, "Lethal Industry".
The best part comes around the 3:50 mark.

Listening to DJ Tiesto's music, I liken it to having an estacy except without the drug injection or taking the pills. It's EUPHORIC!!

MAESTRO: Hans Zimmer

Wow it's been awhile since I last update the Maestro series blog post here! Anyway this week I've found inspiration from one of the greatest soundtrack composers of all time, and would like to share it here. :D

Hans Zimmer (born September 12, 1957), is a German composer and producer. He is best known for his Academy Award, Grammy and Golden Globe–winning film scores. He has composed music for over 100 films, including Hollywood blockbusters such as the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Gladiator, The Da Vinci Code and The Dark Knight.

It's quite common that people did not heard of Hans Zimmer this name, but I guess one should've at least heard some of his compositions before, in the cinema. He's been composing many scores for movies and most of them are big hits among the screenings. Notable ones including The Lion King, Gladiator, Pirates of The Caribbean, Batman The Dark Knight and many more.

Zimmer's composition is said to play a large role in the movie. Aside from the usual actions, the music scores are used to express the emotion and build up the atmosphere of the situation, such as tense scene or in the battlefield. Zimmer's music makes the movie much lively as such that it can left a deep impression with the audience.

(since I'll be mainly focusing the music only, the Youtube videos will be placed at a smaller resolution.)

Here's an example from a recent film, Angels and Demons, the first track from the album, "160 BPM".
I didn't watch the movie but I find this song interesting to start things with. Tune up your volume a little higher at the intro part, which you may find noticed some fine details in the music. I noticed there's an unusual approach in the selection of the instruments used, not your ordinary chamber orchestra. I don't really like excessive vocals but this one had done perfectly. Combining orchestral and choral vocals, effectively creating the such powerful intro.

P/S: 160 BPM means "160 beats per minute", a rather fast-paced song compared to the normal ones around 100-120 BPM.

Hans Zimmer's involvement in Batman The Dark Knight is a highly successful one, composing together with another fellow James Newton Howard in this case, creating an unforgettable experience especially when it comes to the motive of the main characters of the movie, Batman & the Joker.
The overall atmosphere in The Dark Knight's soundtrack is rather dark, mysterious, and perhaps uncomfortable.

One of Hans Zimmer's best attribute in composing is the ability to absorb and assimilate the musical elements of a foreign culture, fuse it together with the Western music. There're a few works from Zimmer which prominently featuring Oriental instruments, such as this example from The Last Samurai.

"Spectres In The Fog" start things off with traditional Japanese instrument called koto. The first half plays the main theme of the movie, while the second half expresses the scene from the movie, the appearance of the warriors from the thick fog as shown in the video's image. Along with it is the, then again, uncomfortable yet effective arousing effect built up for the battle scene in the movie. Anyway, I like how the Japanese element is being added into the track though just appears briefly.

I wonder whether you've noticed any similarity of the tracks mentioned so far? It's so called Zimmer style, heavy percussion and strings to create the sort of dark & tragic tone for the movie.

Now here's a rather earlier work of Zimmer in the mid-90s, from the movie "Beyond Rangoon". Story is about the political instability and conflict happening in Burma/Myanmar, which unfortunately still exist until today.

This song, "Waters of Irrawaddy" prominently features the instruments of South-East Asia, which some may find it familiar as compared to the usual orchestral soundtracks. I am amazed by the composer from the West able to utilize these instruments so well to bring out the emotion of the track, especially through the flute and the percussion.

Here comes my favourite song by Hans Zimmer, from Pirates Of The Caribbean 3: At World's End, "Drink Me Me Hearties".

This video is a combination of 2 songs, "Drink Up Me Hearties" & "Up Is Down". Both songs shared similar traits which you may noticed it.
Somehow listening to this song I felt excited, due to the upbeat rhythm and great orchestral arrangement to bring out the best in the Pirates Of The Caribbean theme.
This is the song, that influenced me to get into Hans Zimmer's song, one of the best ever!

Hans Zimmer's musical composition is not your ordinary soundtrack, it's a masterpiece of hardwork and researches. Research, as in that Zimmer would spend time to collect information of the musical background of certain culture to understand it better, before start composing for the particular soundtrack for the movie. That's why the his music is tastefully done.

Looking forward for his future works, as there're a lot of upcoming nice movies coming up, so do great movie soundtrack compositions as well, by Hans Zimmer. :D

New Sony Walkman Music Players

It's been awhile since I update the audiophile hobby of mine here, but today I've been very excited since getting updates of the new Sony Walkman music players via the subscribed RSS feeds.

First off, the mid-end S series, S640 & S740.

S640
Sony Walkman S640

S740

Sony Walkman S740

Screen: 2.0" LCD (TV output at 720×480 (SD) resolution available)
Storage: 8GB, 16GB & 32GB (S740 only) flash memory.
Earphone: MDR-EX300SL (S740's earphone is similar to MDR-NC33)
Sound Enhancement: Noise-cancelling (S740 only), Clear Bass, Clear Stereo, and DSEE.
Functions: FM Radio, ability to display lyrics (might be limited to Japan models only), play speed control
Battery life: 42 hours music playback. 10 hours video playback.
Codec:
Music -MP3, WMA, AAC, HE-AAC, ATRAC, ATRAC AL, PCM/wav.
Video - AVC (H2.64), MPEG-4, WMV.

The difference between the S640 & S740 is the design of the player (S640's plasticky feel while S740's metallic feel), the noise-cancelling function (exclusive for S740), the earphone and the 32GB which is exclusive to S740.

Sony Walkman S640 & S740

I had the previous generation S730 series, and still using it now. Quite happy to see the improvement in the hardware and quality, but sad to see the demise of the auto playlist SensMe Channels.

Next up, the higher-end version A series, A840.

Sony Walkman S840 black

Sony Walkman S840 brown

2.8 inch WQVGA OLED screen (with TV output function at 720X480 resolution)
Slim design with the thickness of 7.2mm.
Storage: 16GB, 32GB, 64GB
Sound Enhancement: S-Master digital amplifier, Digital Noise Cancelling, DSEE, Clear Stereo, Clear bass, and lyric display.
Earphone: MDR-EX300SL (with NC function, similar to MDR-NC33)
Battery life: 29 hours audio listening. 9 hours of video playback
Codec:
Music - MP3, WMA, AAC, HE-AAC, ATRAC, ATRAC AL, PCM/wav.
Video - AVC (H2.64), MPEG-4, WMV.

Another fine piece of gadget by Sony, this is the new flagship model which I believe will get along together with the current flagship touchscreen X series.
I'm kinda interested to know which would sounded better, though I'm slightly biased towards the A series due to it's better earphone, the MDR-EX300SL.

Sony Walkman S840

The new S series & A series is likely to be available by November. Still don't have much idea bout the pricing but I guess there's a price to pay if you wanna enjoy high quality music.

For me, I'm actually tempted to get the A series in the future. Love the sound of the current player, but A series will definitely sounded better as it comes with the S-Master Digital Amp that builds in within the player itself. Besides, I love the noise-cancelling function too, glad it didn't been taken away heh.
A 16GB is not enough for me, so I'm likely to get 32GB or 64GB model. Budget budget, hmm.....

Left to right: A840, S640, S740, S730.
Sony Walkman Music Player

Anyway on to give my advice whether you should get the new Walkman players or not, do take a few points into consideration:
- It performs superb in music-playback but doesn't comes with fancy application like those in iPod.
- Video-playback is average. Screen is not the biggest and limited codec supported, which means you gonna convert the videos into compatible format (most commonly WMV).
- Noise-canceling only works with the bundled earphone.

Otherwise, it's a real nice piece of gadget to enjoy music-listening to another higher level. :)

P/S: It is OK if you can't really differentiate the model based on the pic, because the design is more or less the same. It would have been better if Sony put in some effort to make each of the series' design unique so that the consumer can easily recognise the model instead of scratching into the details (which most of them wouldn't bother much).

銀河鉄道の夜

銀河鉄道の夜 The Celestial Railroad by Kagaya Studio

I guess some of you might be familiar with this style of graphic isn't it? Absolutely fantastic CG design of the stars, made by the famous Japanese artist Kagaya.

Last night I was randomly surfing YouTube and bump into this Kagaya CG movie called "The Celestial Railroad" (銀河鉄道の夜) .

The trailer of the movie you can view below here.
This is a HD video so if your computer can support it, do try it out!

Besides the amazing graphical representation, I love the music as well.
The theme song "One Night", sang by Inoue Hiroko. The song complements the animation really well!

Since I'm still having holiday, tomorrow might be going to Sunshine City, Ikebukuro to catch this short movie. Cost 900 yen per entry.
Besides, I'd like to get the soundtrack of this movie as well, which cost 2,100 yen.

You may listen to sample tracks from this link.

Haru yo Koi~

Last night when I randomly surf through Youtube I found this song which reminds me of certain moments in life not so long ago.

This song, 春よ、来い "Haru yo, Koi", litterally means "spring, comes". It's sang by Matsutoya Yumi (松任谷由実), in year 1994. 15 years since then huh....

The original MV.

I posted the song up last year December when I first discovered this song. I still remember a friend shared this song through mobile's bluetooth.

This song meant a lot to me. It reminds me of the life in the last few months while I'm still in KL studying the Japanese language. How fast it can be, then half a year later I'm here in Tokyo huh....

This is a beautiful song, an adjective I rarely use to describe a song. It's such a miracle, a special rhythm and melody that only can be found in certain Japanese songs.

You know, sometimes we may enjoy foreign songs eventhough we don't understand the language. The emotion embedded in the song itself can easily "clicks" with our feelings.
While listening to the song I was like being teleported back to that moment, the last few months I spent in Malaysia. It's feels like magic.... everything just came back into the mind.
The things I've done, the food I've ate, the streets I've walked, the places I've been, the people I've met.....

Hah, I just enjoyed listening to such quality songs from time to time to spice up some interesting past memories~

Lastly, a live version of the song. Good thing is that this video has [HD] mode so you can enjoy it at better quality~ :D
